Chapter 12

When he returned to his cabin, Gray found Brimstone waiting for him on the porch. His mind still swirled with the new information Raine had given him, and he narrowly avoided stepping on the cat, who sat square in front of the door, grooming himself as if that was a perfectly legitimate place to attend to one’s personal habits.

“I’ve been looking for you,” Gray said.

“You and about a dozen female kitties,” Brimstone muttered, too busy grooming himself to look up.

After a few moments of waiting for the feline to move out of the way, Gray issued a long-suffering sigh. “Any time you’re finished, I’d love to talk about something important with you.”

Brimstone gave him a pointed stare, his hellfire-orange eyes brimming with attitude. “The things we guys have to do in the name of justice.”

“Excuse me?” Gray fiddled with his keys, scowling. “What are you talking about?”

“This meeting you wanted with Starla Knight.” Brimstone flicked a piece of orange fur from his cheek with his paw. “It’s on for tonight.”

Gray raised a brow. Had the self-absorbed cat known what was on his mind? “I’m sorry?”

“A meeting. You. Starla Knight. This evening.” Brimstone stood and gave a long, leisurely stretch. “Do try to keep up. I’ve been keeping an eye on this Eric Naill murder case, and you’re going to want to talk to her about Bobby Knight. He’s involved in this somehow, though perhaps not in the way you imagine. And setting up this rendezvous wasn’t easy, believe me.” Brimstone looked down his snout at Gray. “I hope you appreciate my efforts on your behalf. Trying to convince that orange tabby of hers to agree to coaxing her mistress to come tonight took all my powers of persuasion, but she finally gave in. You are to meet Starla in the neutral woods at dusk.”

Gray stared at the cat for a moment, his pulse quickening at the thought of seeing the woman who’d been foremost in his thoughts again. But he wasn’t prepared. He hadn’t even considered what questions to ask. This probably wasn’t a good idea at all. He should postpone it until later. “Any way we can reschedule? This evening isn’t the best for me.”

“Have you been sniffing too much hairspray again?” Brimstone quipped. “No, you can’t reschedule. And yes, you need to be there. Trust me, with all fingers pointing at you for Eric’s death, you want to be there. Tonight. In about twenty minutes, I’d say, based on the angle of the sun. Better hurry.”

Brimstone raced off, leaving Gray alone with his panic.

With a sigh, he went inside and freshened up, fed Cosmo, and left him on his perch to rest before heading out to meet Starla. He’d changed into a clean pair of jeans and a black T-shirt, combed his hair, and brushed his teeth. His blood sizzled with an odd mix of adrenaline, anticipation, and apprehension. This could be his chance to find out if Bobby could have killed Eric Naill and clear his own name.
